traffic report March 28, 29, 30

We had decent traffic over the weekend led by Beth Lamontaine's story: "Bar Watch: Portsmouth watering holes cited for violations" Nice job by weekend crew using web head. I'm sure this made a big differnce in cracking the 2,000 page view ceiling. We also got some help from link off of Politico.com to some of our old Hillary Clinton stuff.

Saturday's traffic was led by the lawsuit against the priest and diocese. This was picked up by a website called Spiritdaily and that drove nearly 2,000 page views.

On Friday the man who jumped from the Hampton Bridge led online traffic. I was contacted by a local psychologist who reminds us to provide a "Where to get help" box when we do suicide related stories. I'll put one together that we can keep on file to run with all suicide-related stories.

Traffic totals:

Sunday 18,570 uniques, 88,282 page views
Saturday 17,882 uniques and 83,517 page views
Friday 23,611 uniques and 141,377 page views.

Drunks, lobstermen and kidney worms

Thursday, March 27

We had 24,102 unique visitors and 133,399 page views

Good recovery by Beth led to 3,500 page views on the guy who left BLT, fell down the stairs and died. Feuding lobstermen story also continues to do well as does Gina's 'Idol' piece. Dave Choate's brief on the cat with the rare kidney worm also broke the 1,000 page view ceiling. Glad to see the photo gallery "Making a fuzzy head" get nearly 2,000. This was a project by the Kittery Garden Club. Strictly local.

With four days left in the month we have 703,906 unique visits against a goal of 795,214. That means we need to average 22,827 over the next four days. Let's pull out all the stops and see if we can make it.

Idol and breaking news lead the way

On Wednesday, March 26 we had 24,443 unique visitors.

Items of note were two web-only stories written by Gina Carbone. The first, "Idol' recap: What's wrong with Carly?" got 758 page views but an update with a new headline, "Did David Cook steal 'Billy Jean'?" was our number 1 story with 1,646 page views. I'd guess that putting David Cook's full name in the headline improved its Google ranking.

Jeff, would you agree?

A press release about Stonewall Kitchen's new cooking school also scored more than 1,000 page views which serves as a reminder that interesting press releases are valuable content and should be posted on our website ASAP.

American Idol, jealous husbands, angry band members

Yesterday's online traffic was solid with strong readership of Gina's plea to vote Krisy Lee Cook off American Idol, the angry newlywed smashing the car windshields of his wife and her lover and music students letting a York Budget Committee member know he is a pompous jerk.

The best performing content on Tuesday was Don's photo gallery of the Seabrook cottage fire and Beth's story on the Portsmouth carjacking.

Slow yesterday, looks good today

Yesterday was slow with 24,977 uniques and 142,524 page views. Do we have a new baseline?

On March 4 we had 27,547 uniques and 149,083 page views.

What's interesting about this is that we really didn't have any blockbuster stories, photo galleries or other special features driving traffic. It looked like all our categories, both editorial and advertising, were up just a little bit and that was enough to make a difference.

Is 27,547 our new baseline?

Let's redouble our efforts at posting breaking news today to see if we can make the number move.

February 2008 has been another record-setting month for Seacoastonline.

After achieving an average of 27,990 unique daily visitors in January we set the bar even higher with 29,233 uniques. This sets our year-to-date daily average at 28,615, which puts us slightly ahead of our year-end goal of 28,366.

March certainly came in like a lion yesterday with 62,366 unique visitors thanks, in large part to a Fark pickup of a wire story about a giant snowwoman. But many of our local stories also did extremely well, most notably Dan Lorenz’ story, “What is going on with my TV?” that brought in more than 7,000 page views.

Saturday’s traffic was also relatively strong thanks to Gina Carbone’s review of “The Other Boleyn Girl which brought in close to 6,000 page views.

Just a reminder to our weekly editors that you now have a breaking news window on your home pages. Please work with Andrew and Alexa to see that these windows contain fresh breaking news daily.
