Tragedy, dancing stars and parking tickets

Very strong day with 31,232 unique visitors and 159,515 page views.

Our top story was the fatal crash on the Maine Turnpike in Ogunquit. Updated three times this story generated 5,400 page views. Gina's online-only piece on Dancing with the Stars got more than 4,500 page views, followed by Beth's story about the guy who got arrested after showing up drunk to fight his parking ticket. Gina's hits were driven by Google while Beth's story was Farked.

The most remarkable thing about yesterday's traffic is that every one of our top 10 articles had 1,000 hits or more. I think that's a first.

In the photo gallery category Ken Stejbach's Lamprey River Canoe race continues to do very well with nearly 4,000 page views yesterday.

Reporter chases senator up statehouse steps

I have posted a link to a 26-second video from the Boston Herald's website below that I'd like reporters to check out. Unlike the high-end work being done by our photo staff that requires quality equipment and editing, these types of point and shoot videos add great visual content to your stories online without a lot of heavy lifting. All of our point and shoot cameras can capture video and, with practice, you can actually get respectable results. I have been using the exact same cameras we have here in the newsroom with my UNH students and some have done very good work with them.

Last night I had David Hurlburt, an executive producer at WMUR, speak to my class. He said that while they have great equipment and skilled producers, they often chose to run raw video on their website because it has an authenticity to it. While the longest TV news segment runs 1:30 he said they'll often run raw video of 10 minutes or more on the website and that it is an important driver of traffic for them.

Pastor, pizza and American Idol

Solid traffic with 26,386 unique visitors and 140,072 page views.

The suspended pastor, which appears under two different headlines, garnered nearly 4,000 page views. We toned down the first web headline "Pastor's a player" to something more straightforward because this story is volatile enough without a provocative headline. Pizza maker sex assault was our number two story followed closely by Gina's excellent commentary on Idol Gives Back. Lately you've been seeing something called "AP Hosted" consistently in the top 10. This is because Tim White adjusted some coding and we are now getting credited for page views on AP stories that are flowing to our site automatically throughout the day. This simple coding fix could result in 1,000 additional page views a day. Thank you, Tim!

Document helps drive traffic

Strong day yesterday with 31,034 uniques and 145,926 page views.

Interesting that our number five story was simply a pdf of the indictments list from the county attorney's office. In case you are not aware, it is very easy for us to make pdfs of documents to post on the web and these are proven traffic drivers. If you've got an interesting document please bring it to Andrew and Alexa's attention so they can get it posted with your story. Woman charged with DUI on way to Bible study and New Castle artifacts heist also did very well.

Monster day online

Yesterday we had monster traffic with 41,503 uniques and 160,303 page views. Surge was due to a Fark pickup of Beth Dinan's story of the woman charged with DUI on way to Bible study class and then great local traffic on the story about the pastor suspended for dating a parishioner. The Holly Spreen story and Gina's online-only plea to save Adam Carolla (sadly unsuccessful), also scored big. I think using Adam Carolla's name in the headline helped drive up its Google ranking. Nice job all around folks. Thanks.

Excellent day online

Very strong traffic yesterday with 34,355 unique visitors and 158,370 page views. We got a nice boost from a link off a conservative radio talk show host's website called boortz.com that linked to the York tax scam story. The Holly Spreen story was very strong and the pot case that got tossed due to a backup at the state lab benefitted from a link from Fark. The umbrella tree story out of Rye got more than 1,500 page views which just goes to show that the web is an audience of niches and the more niche content we put up the more we'll drive audience. The granny arrested for parking tickets scored more than 1,300 page views in the short time it was up. Ken Stejbach's spring sports gallery drove more than 3,000 page views. I think the American Idol story, which got 971 page views would have done better if we put the guy's name in the headline rather than calling him "The boy from Oz."

Strong start April

Strong traffic yesterday with 32,779 uniques and 148,160 page views.

Our good friend Fark helped us with links to both the York tax scam and the pot case dismissal. Dodds remained over 2,000 page views and a press release on the sale of Bentley Pharmaceuticals also garnered 1,700 hits. In all 7 of our top 10 stories has 1,000 page views or more.

Today also looks strong with a new site, Boortz.com, giving us strong referrals, also, it appears, on the tax scam story.

So far April has been very, very good to us.

Moving in the right direction

Daily uniques were back over 25,000 yesterday and page views at a respectable 131,000. Our top story was Gina Carbone's review of the movie '21.' This story did well in part because it had a provocative headline: "Did 21 bet on being called racist?" The Dodds story finished a close second and we got anothyer day of goodness from our old Hillary Clinton stuff. A surprise winner was the feature out of York: "Ready for a baby" Think it over?" Which scored more than 1,000 page views.

Last week when I went to my son's second grade class for a "wax museum" a took some shots of the kids and Deb Cram helped me post it and it was our number 2 gallery yesterday. Feel free, if you are at community events, to rattle off some snapshots. We'll find a way to get them posted and they help drive traffic.
