Traffic - Thursday, February 28

Traffic for Thursday, February 28, 2008:

132,920 daily unique visitors
23,003 page views

Numbers slightly down, not unusual heading towards the end of a week,
but a reminder that we can't sit back and enjoy the residual traffic
from a few hot stories from earlier in the week.

Extra thanks to YCCS reporter Laura Dolce (YCCS) for so many daily updates this week for the YCCS web front, whose breaking news section is now well-populated. Keep it up. Others, do the same! Notify Andrew of your briefs, advances and stories.

We got great mileage out of Cheryl Senter's Powderhouse Hill Ski Area photo gallery -- only 21 images, yet 11,000+ page views for the few days it's been up.

Traffic for Wednesday, February 27

144,214 page views (down from 153,904 previous week)
24,630 daily unique visitors (down from 31,115 previous week)

Page views and uniques were down, despite good numbers on a few
stories and galleries. For the last two days of the month please keep
an ear out for breaking news and think about advances or briefs for
any stories you're working on, so we can finish strong in Feb. -- it's
been a great month for traffic so let's not lose the momentum. A few
of you have already made extra efforts to feed breaking news stories
to the web during the past week and this is greatly appreciated. Keep it
up; this is exactly what we all need to be doing.

Traffic - Tuesday, February 26, 2008

140,469 page views
27,088 daily unique visitors

Page views were down compared to last week but uniques were up, thanks in part to continued referrals from fark.com, on Skiff's bus ride story. It was yesterday's most-viewed story, generating 4,300 page views -- still going strong six days after it came out. In all, this story generated 20,577 page views during that period -- and still counting.

Rachel Forrest's story on Daryl Hall's plans for renovating his historic home also did well, just shy of making the top ten. This and related content from Nancy Cicco's new Home & Life special section are themed together on a landing page (seacoastonline.com/homeAndLife), so we should continue to see more traffic from this effort.

Reminder: we've got a town meetings / deliberative sessions page that we continue to feed. If you've for related stories, ballots, etc., send them to Andrew to get them on the page.

The #2 story ("Sex offender sentenced to more than 15 years, lifetime
probation") is an example of one that could have been missed but ended
up driving lots of traffic. This was simply a press release, but it
was in the top ten most popular stories for three days in a row,
driving between 2,000 and 3,000 page views a day.

Reminder to weekly editors: Keep in mind you've now got a "breaking
news" section on your web fronts. I urge you to post advances,
briefs, announcements, etc. in that spot. It's a way to keep your
home page fresh, and helps train your readers to check your home page
daily, not just on print publication days. This benefits YOU. To
use, post a story via Saxotech and tag with two pieces of taxonomy:

- your publication name
- "up to the minute"

Keep it more news-like, less feature-like. It will automatically
appear on our main (portal) page as well. When you have something to
post, see Andrew for a three minute refresher course.
Remember these can be brief. No need for a full story -- ask yourself
what you DO know at this point, and put it out there, with a note
"Full story to follow" or "Update to follow." Your reporters are
probably still in a "print" mindset and timetable, but remind them to
feed you what they know, so you can feed it to the web if you see fit.

Great traffic, Farked twice

Thursday, Feb. 21 was a monster day with 39,300 unique visitors and 153,270 page views.

We were Farked twice. Beth's story on our low-riding pants girl picked up more than 10,000 page views, thanks, in part, to Andrew's very clever Fark headline : ♫ Take a little trip. Take a little trip. Take a little trip with me-ee. ♫ But not not on this bus. Low rider's hanging pants got her kicked off"

The York County Coast Star also got Farked for its story "fines for fuel." This picked up more than 2,000 page views. Here was the Fark submitter's take on this story: "Maine town gives the recipients of parking tickets the option of giving the money from the fine to buy heating oil for those in need. So go grab that handicap space and do your part for the needy."

I know you'll all be shocked that the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model also did very well.

WEEKLY EDITORS, PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU NOW HAVE A BREAKING NEWS BOX ON YOUR HOME PAGES. PLEASE BE SURE TO POST A FEW BREAKING NEWS ITEMS TO THIS AREA EACH DAY. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS CONTACT ANDREW.

Feb. 20: strong traffic and an important lesson

We had good traffic online Wednesday with 31,115 unique visitors and 153,904 page views.

Our strong showing was due, in large part, to a brief David Choate story, posted at 5:47 p.m., informing people they could watch last night's lunar eclipse at the UNH Observatory.

In meetings with reporters I have stressed that online, short, timely reports are just as important as full stories, and this is an example. Another example is a simple preview of a sentencing hearing of a Hampstead driver who killed a Portsmouth woman. This "staff report" took us no time to do and has garnered more than 2,000 hits since it was posted. Our original plan was to simply cover the hearing and file a report. If we had done that we would have missed out on all the traffic the preview brought us.

Congratulations to all who worked on the Valentine's Day Landing Page. It finished its short run with more than 11,000 page views. Close to 6,000 people also voted for their favorite couple. This definitely goes in the win column and should be repeated next year.

Weekend traffic was fairly lackluster. Month to date we are averaging 31,747 daily unique visitors. Let's keep the pedal to the metal.

Beautiful Valentines; traffic Feb. 13

I hope everyone has had a chance to check out the Valentine's Day page Gina, Andrew and Mary put together both in print and online. It's 14 couples sharing their "How We Met" stories. Online readers can also vote for their favorite couple and the winner will get $150 toward a restaurant of their choice. I read all 14 this morning in print and was reminded again how powerful it is to hear someone telling a story that is important to them in their own words. If you are busy and don't have time to read all 14 pieces at least check out Theresa and Maurice's story for some humor and wisdom.

Traffic yesterday was very strong, with 30,620 uniques and 146,587 page views, as once again the national media picked up our coverage of the Clinton campaign and a local landlord. The majority of refers came to us from foxnews.com. Two Exeter-based stories; the student who died in Australia and the Fort Rock Farm ZBA hearing, also did very well.

Here are the details:

1. Article: Clinton camp reimburses; landlord to donate check to Obamac ampaign 8,146 18.1%
2. Article: Exeter church at Fort Rock approved 1,456 3.2%

Colleagues,

Yesterday was a bit sluggish with 24,921 uniques and 129,249 page views. Today, Karen Dandurant's story on the Clinton campaign stiffing a local landlord has been picked up by just about every political site in the country including the DrudgeReport. We already have more than 70,000 uniques and the day is still young. At this pace we will beat our traffic from the NH Primary Day.

Unique visitors 25,331 and page views 144,711.

Well, there's nothing like brothel secrets to get people reading. Great job by Beth to stay on top of the this story and pounce on the records once they were unsealed. A big scoop translated into big traffic.

Adam Leech did a real nice job on the story about the Navy SEAL killed in Iraq and then greatly increased his audience by submitting the story to icasualties.com, a website that lists those killed in combat. How did he find this site? He Googled Iraq and Death and this was the first thing that came up. Brilliant.

Lighthouse Award Winner (it's like the newsroom Oscars, you keep the title forever) Ken Stejbach brought us another 4,000 page views with his photo gallery "Night of 1,000 points for Petzy."

Kudos to Sue Morse for her Sailor's widow story that garnered more than 3,000 page views.
As many of you know we are now using youtube as our video platform. Yesterday we posted videos related to the Danish Health Club brothel. Unfortunately youtube links related videos so you can only imagine what linked to our brothel-bust videos. We got the "chicken ranch" and other videos down quickly and Deb and Andrew are working on a solution. Youtube mavens please contact them if you know how to stop this from happening. There is a button you can click that is supposed to block the attachment of related videos but it doesn't seem to be working.

Web traffic report Feb. 1 & 2

Friday, Feb. 1

Major thanks and congratulations to Beth for her report on top salaries in Portsmouth. As you can see this story got more than 3,400 hits on Friday and another 3,000-plus on Saturday. Thanks also to Andrew and Claudette who scanned and posted the full report in pdf form for the web. This report was downloaded more than 1,000 times.

This was an example of good reporting and execution that can be duplicated by all of our reporters. I know Adam Leech is doing something similar for Portsmouth's schools and I STRONGLY encourage all our town reporters to get these numbers for their towns and schools, write reports and work with Andrew to get the PDFs online. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

More praise goes to Ken Stejbach whose photo galleries, singlehandedly, earned us more than 7,000 page views on Friday and 9,300 on Saturday. This tells us that all photographers at sporting events should create galleries. Please see me if you have questions about this.
