Top story was Shir's piece on the new owners at Philbrick's.

Looks like we picked up some traffic from a survivalist site: survivalblog.com. for Mike McCord's Going Great guns story that ran Sunday.

An essay for our times

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a great American newspaper, will join the Rocky Mountain News and many smaller daily newspapers Tuesday when it publishes its last print edition.

Clay Shirky, a writer and new media professor at NYU, has written an essay for our times "Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable." Have some courage, give it a read and let me know what you think.

Here's an excerpt to whet your curiosity:

"Society doesn’t need newspapers. What we need is journalism. For a century, the imperatives to strengthen journalism and to strengthen newspapers have been so tightly wound as to be indistinguishable. That’s been a fine accident to have, but when that accident stops, as it is stopping before our eyes, we’re going to need lots of other ways to strengthen journalism instead.

"When we shift our attention from 'save newspapers’ to 'save society’, the imperative changes from ‘preserve the current institutions’ to ‘do whatever works.’ And what works today isn’t the same as what used to work."

Read the full essay.

Our Monday traffic was just below budget with 32,139 uniques and 163,936 page views.

Let's step up our efforts at feeding breaking news to Andrew (he's working from home but gets his seacoastonline email) and Alexa throughout the day and we should get right back on track.

Top two items are photo galleries from Winnacunnet and Portsmouth championship games.

Town voting stories throughout top 100

Again small traffic to many stories added up to Seacoastonline meeting its March traffic goal with 33,913 uniques and 186,643 page views.

Election results from local towns were scattered throughout the top 100. Top story was the Middle Street rollover (spot news is always king!) followed closely by the photo gallery of the remodeled Tower House in Rye.

Interesting to see Mzinga blogs and specialty pages like Crime and Dining rising to the top 100.

Pick and shovel work leads to good numbers

Never has a newsroom worked so hard to achieve 33,564 uniques and 183,353 page views.

With Andrew and Gina away Tuesday we had no Fark and no reality TV to give us a lift. This was just pick and shovel work with local news and local readers.

Instead of showing the top 10 as usual I have posted the top 100 to show the long-tail effect of small traffic to many stories combining to create a solid day of uniques and page views.

Local galleries lead way to 211,000 page views

A deep content mix led to 46,000 uniques and 211,000 page views yesterday.

Top story was silliness about a man assaulting Chuck E. Cheese but that was closely followed by the Portsmouth rape case, Gina's bachelor posts and J.P. Nadeau's censure. Kisses and Disses and the business story on Ri Ra also did very well.

Galleries for the Durham Fire and the March 1 snowstorm also did very well, garnering 13,619 and 10,996 page views respectively.

16 articles and galleries get more than 1,000 page views

Thursday saw uniques at 53,015 and page views at 201,941. You could argue that this was the most impressive day of the month since such a broad mix of stories and photos drove traffic instead of one monster item.

Armed standoff, Real Housewives and a topless coffee shop

We had our second-best day of the month yesterday with 64,185 uniques and 197,837 page views and are quickly approaching the 1 million uniques mark.

We had some help from our usual friends at Google, Yahoo and Fark, but some new referring domains drove traffic including: literotica (an adult site please don't view at work), majorgeeks.com and hfboards.com, a sports forum website.

Great job last night on the breaking news at Gosling Meadows (we should see more of those numbers in tomorrow's report). Special thanks to Beth and Scott who stood out in the cold to get a great story and photos, Andrew, who sent out alerts and got three versions of the story posted and Desiree for keeping the print operation running smoothly.

Thanks also to Carl Pepin who sat through four overtimes at the Kennebunk Hockey game and provided a story and photo gallery.

And the Oscar for Most Read Web Story goes to ....

On Monday, Gina Carbone who had our number 1, 6 and 15 stories with her Oscar coverage. Gina and Company did a great job both online and in print. Check out her blog "Seacoast Pop Culture" when you get a chance.

I'd also like to thank Scott Yates for turning around a photo and extended cutline on the veterinary clinic fire in Newington late Saturday. That was our number one web content item on Sunday.

Kudos also to Jenn Feals for her well rounded story on dirty dancing at Exeter High School.

One area where we can improve: text alerts. We're lagging in the number of these we send out and that is causing us to fall behind our peers in terms of text alert subscribers. Let's look for opportunities to communicate with our readers via Textcaster.
